Those familiar with technology likely came across this tweet:

AI startup Hume Raises $50M Series B and Releases New Empathic Voice Interface.

Meet Hume’s Empathic Voice Interface (EVI), the first conversational AI with emotional intelligence. The Empathic Voice Interface (EVI) is a new technology aiming to revolutionize human-computer interaction by incorporating emotional intelligence.

EVI goes beyond just words. It utilizes a special type of large language model (eLLM) trained to recognize emotions in your voice. This includes factors like tone, word emphasis, and even pauses.

EVI has a number of unique empathic capabilities:

  1. Responds with human-like tones of voice based on your expressions
  2. Reacts to your expressions with language that addresses your needs and maximizes satisfaction
  3. EVI knows when to speak, because it uses your tone of voice for state of the art end-of-turn detection
  4. Stops when interrupted, but can always pick up where it left off

Chatting with EVI was enjoyable. I found the experience somewhat pleasant, although I remain cautious about it for now. It seems to be in its early stages of development. Perhaps in the future, as it evolves, we may witness its positive impact on our lives.

How to try Hume AI EVI :-

  • Go to Hume’s demo website – https://demo.hume.ai/
  • Press start conversation and enable mic access
  • Say anything you like and start a conversation
  • Watch the AI talk back and display your tone and emotional state in the bar on the right of the screen.

I kind of liked its Responsive Communication. Based on the emotions it detects, EVI tailors its responses accordingly. It can adjust the tone of its voice to match yours, making interactions feel more natural and engaging.

Some potential applications of EVI:

  • Virtual Assistants: Imagine a virtual assistant that can sense your frustration if you’re having trouble with a task and offer additional support.
  • Customer Service: EVI-powered customer service agents could be better equipped to handle frustrated customers by responding with empathy and understanding.
  • Mental Health Support: EVI could potentially be used to develop virtual therapists or chatbots that can offer emotional support in a more nuanced way.

It’s important to note that EVI is a relatively new technology, and its long-term impact and applications are still under development. However, it has the potential to significantly improve human-computer interaction by creating a more natural, emotionally intelligent user experience.
